February 2017 Athlete of the Month

1. When did you start CrossFit and why?
I started CrossFit this past July. I was in a rut with my gym routine and wanted to do something that would challenge me. My brother and sister were both CrossFitting and encouraged me to give it a try. My brother-in-law and his wife (Brian and Michelle) both couldn’t shut up about CFW when they were members, so it was easy to select a gym.
2. What time of day you come in?
Most days, 6 pm. 6 am on Friday mornings.
3. What is one movement you hate and one you love?
I love box jumps, though I’ve gotten careless and hit my shin more times than I would like to admit. I hate snatches.
4. Any big goal(s) set for the next year?
As far as CrossFit goes, I would like to do Fran Rx. Fran was the workout in my first class after my on ramp, so it is a really good benchmark for me. I just got my first couple unassisted pull-ups the end of last year, so being able to do enough for Fran will keep me working on them.
Outside of the gym, I would like to finish up my actuarial credentials. I just passed my last of nine exams, so I am very close to checking that one off the list!
5. Tell us one fun fact about you.
I was a very serious ballet dancer growing up. I considered pursuing it professionally, but ultimately decided I wanted a more stable career. I still enjoy taking ballet class on the weekends and do occasional performances.
6. You were left on a deserted island. What one food and thing (i.e. book, music player, etc…) would you want to be left with?
I would definitely bring my kindle. For the food, I would want the comfort of my mom’s chocolate chip cookies… either baked or the raw dough.
7. How has CrossFit helped you in sports? Life?
I love coming to the gym after work because it helps me clear my head. When I’m at the gym, I can focus on the workout and nothing else. It helps me let go of any of the stress of my day which has been a challenge for me in the past.
8. How have workouts changed for you over the years?
I haven’t been CrossFitting very long, but there were a lot of workouts in the beginning where I was proud to have just made it all the way through. There are still times I feel that way, but now I’ve started to figure out which workouts I can really push myself on and which ones to take it easier on so that I can focus on my form or specific skills.
